I Dare You

“I dare you to quit Human Resources!”

<–(me as teenage punk in the fifties)

The best Human Resource experience that I had was outside HR.    As the Total Quality Manager for a progressive electronics company, I was able to participate in the mainstream of the company and live the life of a operations employee.  I could see what was needed by Operations from their HR department.  I saw the hardships that the everyday line person witnessed.  I could see that HR could be an obstacle instead of a help to me in achieving my goals.  I also remembered this phenomenon when I worked in Production Control many, many years ago.  I recalled that the “Personnel Department” at that time was not well-respected and was considered to be bureaucratic overhead.  At 20 years old, I decided that when I transferred into the “Personnel Department,” I would be different and change that negative image.  I’ve been working on this ever since.

So, are you up for the dare?   Developing empathy for the line manager is well worth it.  It helped me shape the HR department and it’s services for decades.  It made me a business person that earned his place at the table.
