I’m Not Larry Winget
By Ron | August 7, 2008
Not me:
I’m not Larry Winget.
Sometimes I want to be like him. He reminds me of when I was a young pup. Life was black and white. Life was simple. I was sure about almost eveything. I even talked like Larry.
If Larry was talking to Human Resource people, he might say things like:
“It’s real simple, folks, just hire the right people and everything else will fall in place.”
“If you believe in people, stop writing policies and procedures aimed at the 5% who aren’t good employees.”
“Stop whining about not being at the table, just go to the table and act like you belong.”
“If you are tired of being considered as an overhead department, get off your a__, and get out there in the mainstream.”
“If your managers aren’t acting like good leaders, you need to act like a good leader.”
“If you want to have influence, start acting influential.”
I probably enjoy Larry because I grew up in simpler times. Perhaps it is more complex today, but sometimes I think we make it that way. In HR, we can get bogged down in complex compensation schemes, difficult to understand benefit plans and elaborate performance management systems. We then complicate it all with lingo and buzzwords noone outside Human Resources understands.
If Larry was VP of Human Resources, what would he do?
