We’re In HR Rehab And Still On Step One
By Ron | December 12, 2008
Meanwhile, back at Rehab, we’re still studying the first step. So, what does it mean that…HR has one job: business success? It means that we have to know about business and, specifically about the company we work for and how it runs. We need to know what makes it a success in it’s particular market and how we can be the main drivers to make it successful.
We each received a workbook with these questions/instructions:
1. Can you read a P & L?
2. Do you know the products and/or services of your company and explain them to the group like you were the VP of Marketing?
3. Can you tell the group about the operations outside HR, like you worked there?
4. Tell us about the main issues preventing your company from being more successful and your solutions to fixing the issues.
5. With those solutions in mind, prepare a written plan (initiatives, goals, strategies and tactics) that you can drive as the Human Resource Manager/Director/VP.
When I could answer yes to the first 3 questions, formulate the correct issues and solutions for #4, then I am well on my way to being a business person first, and an HR person next. The true measure will be when I can identify the areas where I can make a difference in #5.
At our next meeting in Rehab, we’re going to take a typical issue in #4 and prepare a plan per #5.
