Taking Step Two at HR Rehab

By Ron | December 16, 2008

Our counselor has told us at HR Rehab that we never complete the steps.  Our discussion of Step One was only an introduction and we need to revisit that step continuously.  We should know all about the business and participate in every possible avenue to help the business grow and prosper.

“Now, Step Two is going to be a hard one,” she warned us….

HRisn’t the Complaint Department or your Kindergarten teacher. We’re going to teach people to grow up and stop wasting our time like they’re 5-year-olds who can’t share their toys.

Everyone chuckled.  We all knew what this step meant.  We all felt this way before, but never expressed the sentiment out loud.  “So, you understand, don’t you?  Anybody have any ideas why Frank (Frank Roche) created this step?”  Some of us answered…

“Because juvenile behavior by employees detracts from the business becoming successful.”

“We in Human Resources need to focus our energies on positive things that will contribute to the bottom line.”

“Responding to negative energy, produces negative results.”

“The perception that HR is the complaint department detracts from what we really could be.”

“By being the Complaint Department, we erode the authority of the line management and encourage employees to whine about petty issues.”

Our counselor responded, “Very good.  Next time, we will brainstorm ideas on how to implement this step.”
