HR Rehab: Implementing the Second Step
By Ron | December 18, 2008
Someone in the group whined, “We can’t implement this step; employees need to know that they can come to us.” Others worried about the tone of the step and how it goes against the good nature of HR people everywhere. Being a fan of Larry Winget (”Shut up, Stop Whining and Get a Life”), I kinda liked the sound of the step myself: “HR isn’t the Complaint Department or your Kindergarten teacher. We’re going to teach people to grow-up and stop wasting our time like they’re 5-year-olds who can’t share their toys.”
Our group leader told us to stop fussing and start brainstorming how we could make Step 2 a reality. We immediately chimed in with some ideas:
- Hire adults - people who are mature and have a proven track record of being responsible for their actions
- Make sure the company has a written Value for “Being Positive”
- Make the company a “No Whining Zone”
- Train Managers on how to establish a positive environment in their departments
- Train Managers on how to listen to their employees
- Ensure that complaining is not rewarded while positive attitudes are
- Have a workshop on the values/culture during the Onboarding Process and beyond
- We in HR could stop being co-dependent and enjoying the fact that our employees “needed” us so much (we liked them coming to us for help)
After our session, we all felt better that maybe we really could make Step Two part of our work life.
