Taking Step 3 at HR Rehab
By Ron | December 19, 2008
Meanwhile back at Rehab we started reviewing the Third Step:
“We won’t accept mediocrity in HR. Human Resources cannot be where people go when they can’t find meaningful employment. We’re going to cowboy up our talent. We want - we demand - the best and the brightest.” [source: Frank Roche, KnowHR]
I used to hear of a company who sent employees to work in HR when they couldn’t cut it in their own department and I don’t believe that this was an isolated case. I also think that this was a result of a thinking process that I have heard about for a long time:
Not everyone can do my job, but anyone can work in HR.
Only once in awhile, during my long career did I have someone outside HR tell me that they knew how hard my job was. They always followed it up with, “I couldn’t do your job and I wouldn’t want to do your job.” I was always surprised, but very appreciative that someone actually knew it.
I believe that HR is an art, not a science, but not everyone is a good artist. We have to hire Michelangelo’s in our HR departments. We not only deserve it, we have to do it if we want that seat at the table.
