Taking Step Four at HR Rehab
By Ron | December 21, 2008
Step 4 is: Nothing is sacred. We’re going to critically think about everything we do. And if we hear people saying “That’s the way we’ve always done it,” well… don’t make me come over there.
Our counselor told us that there are other idea killers, like… “We’ve already tried that,” or, “That won’t work here,” or, “That’s stupid,” or “We’re unique,”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” or “You don’t understand…” Everyone in our group took the vow that we wouldn’t use any of these statements while we were reviewing our respective HR departments for change.
We were further instructed that we should look at everything we have been doing within Human Resources and determine - What is working and what is not. Prior to that, we should review what our mission is, really is. Someone spoke up and said, “Yeah if our mission was to offer the most costly benefits, our HR department would win.” Someone else chimed in, “Our mission should have been to be the best event planners around, because I believe we are.” We all agreed that maybe we should review our HR Mission Statements and see how valid they were.
Our counselor ended the session by saying, “You know, sacred cows make the best hamburgers. So, when you get out of HR Rehab, go make a lot of hamburgers!”
Note: A special thanks to Frank Roche for creating the Ten Steps which he called HR Tenets.
