Rebellion at HR Rehab
By Ron | December 23, 2008
“Tim left!”
“You’re kidding.”
“No, he said that he didn’t need recovery, that HR is fine the way it is.”
“Well, some of us won’t make it. You know that.”
“You’re right. I’m glad we’re here.”
“Okay, everyone, as you know, Tim left the group and we need to let him go and we need to get on with our own recovery. As your counselor, I think we need to review what we have covered so far. In Step One, we realized that our only HR job is - business success. In the Second Step, we agreed to stop being known as the Complaint Department and we no longer accept mediocrity via Step 3. In Step 4, we learned that nothing is sacred - we will challenge everything we do to see if it makes sense to keep doing it. Let’s brainstorm those things you’re doing now that you would change or eliminate.”
__ Planning events like the company picnic
__ Benefits escalation
__ Lowering hiring standards
– Being “Dr. No” in compensation matters (saying “no” to salary increases)
__ Chasing managers for performance appraisals which are overdue
__ Performance Appraisals that don’t do what we want them to do
– Being part of promoting the wrong employees especially to supervisory/management positions
“Great this is a good starter list. You will have a lot to work on when you get back to your jobs in Human Resources. Meanwhile, let’s take a break to celebrate the holidays.”
