Back To HR Rehab

By Ron | December 28, 2008

Meanwhile back at HR Rehab…

“OK, people, raise your right hand and swear after me…We’re not in charge of the holiday party anymore.  Yeah, that’s right.  We aren’t the social secretaries.  We have real jobs to do.  See Step #1.  Thank-you, you now have taken Step Five.”

“But how do we get out of this responsibility?  Companies expect us to take care of the holiday party, the picnic, and any other social events,” whined one of the members of the group.

“Okay team, let’s brainstorm ways to bail out of this ugly tradition that Human Resources got stuck with.”

1. Create a employee social committee that reports to various managers in the company who enjoy this stuff.

2. Rotate the assignment amongst all of the departments.

3. Eliminate social functions.  Attend to business.  Make every workday a team event.

4. Negotiate with the CEO to eliminate social events from the list of HR duties.

Editor’s note: I know how hard this task is to dump.  I also realize that some of you in HR love being involved in these social functions.  But, I also believe that when we are viewed as the Social Secretaries of the organization, our credibility in being part of the business suffers and suffers greatly.  I have been successful in the past in accomplishing 1,2 and 4 above.  The idea of eliminating these events is probably not realistic, but might have a chance in these times of economic woe.  And… don’t forget we owe the creation of these “steps” to Frank Roche of KnowHR.
