Taking Step 6 At HR Rehab
By Ron | December 29, 2008
We all gaped at Step Six: Business is gonna want a seat at our table. The time of putting HR at the kid’s table is over. You said - Our business is about people - Now, with way fewer of them, it’s going to be true. Like scary true. Take a number. [source: Frank Roche of KnowHR]
For years, we in Human Resources wanted to be accepted at their table. We wanted to be accepted as equals to the other functions in the company. We wanted to be recognized for our contributions too. We were tired of being treated like overhead and second class citizens to the direct line people. Now, we are at HR Rehab considering that we might actually have our very own table. Maybe, just maybe, the business is going to believe their own cliche about people being their most important assets and realize that HR needs to be at the head of this new table.
Wait a minute. Is this just a fantasy or a possibility? What can we do to help make it happen? Well, as our HR Rehab Counselor points out - if we accomplish Steps 1, 2 and 3, we got a shot at this happening. We must become known for exercising our core competencies of acquiring top talent, keeping them on board and inspiring a culture of success and excitement. Here are 10 things we can do to make ”them” want to sit at our table:
1. Truly live up to our name of Talent Acquisition
2. Beat the drum loud and constantly - HR makes it happen. HR is the driver of business success. HR is the catalyst for your success.
3. Drive the initiatives for Culture enhancement.
4. Stop doing the things that don’t work.
5. Talk like business people and act like business people.
6. Speak up. Be visible.
7. Become the CEO’s right hand person.
8. If there is a RIF, make sure that the winners stay behind.
9. Drive “the way” after the RIF: re-energizing the team to seek a new and exciting road to success.
10. Don’t settle for anything less.
