HR Rehab - Taking Step 8

By Ron | January 5, 2009

Back at HR Rehab, we all stood up and repeated the words to Step 8: We’re going to make pay-for-performance work.  It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.  So forgive us if we insist that the best people make the most money.  It’s not a rule - it’s a fact.  Everyone at Rehab had tears in their eyes just thinking of the possibilities of Step 8 becoming a reality.  Most of us still have our doubts, especially those of us who have been around a long time in the world of HR.

Editors Note: All of my HR life, I pushed, cajoled, demanded, and begged that we keep striving to pay employees according to their contribution.  We all know the obstacles - manager/supervisor subjectivity, politics, fear of upsetting those who aren’t stars, bureaucracy, inadequate measurement tools, ad nauseum.  Sometimes, it seems that the task was/is impossible.

I think that if we expect perfection we won’t achieve it.  I’ve gotten close to the goal and getting close was pretty  cool.  I’ll share my experience on this challenging topic next time; so stay tuned!

[Thanks again to Frank Roche for devising these "steps."]
